The Perth Concert Hall was treated to a rousing performance of Vivaldi’s
Gloria in one of two concerts included as part of the annual Perth International Arts Festival. Conducted by Philip Pickett, musical director and founder of the prestigious New London Consort and director of Early Music at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, the ensemble moved almost seamlessly through Vivaldi’s Concerto for Two Trumpets and brought some of Vivaldi’s lesser known pieces to life.
The consort performs regularly at many other major festivals and has performed at some of the world’s most prestigious music centres. Gloria, which featured the vocals of eight principal artists and fourteen instrumentalists still managed to communicate the depth of the pieces, despite their small numbers.
While the evening’s first piece had a somewhat shaky start with the bass baritone seeming to have some trouble and the performers struggling with synchronicity, it was all brought together at the end to complete an excellent evening. In fact, the performance as a whole seemed to move towards a more harmonious end.
The standout performance of the night belonged to soprano Julia Gooding, whose flawless rendition of Vengo A Voi, Luci Adorate showcased her ability to master what has often been considered a very difficult part of Vivaldi’s piece. Also delightful were the dextrous Louise Strickland and violinist Penelope Spencer, who gave impressive performances.
